🔧 Important Guidelines for Installing Underfloor Heating Film in Ireland

Proper preparation and professional installation of underfloor heating systems is essential to ensure optimal performance and safety. Please review the following key requirements before beginning the installation process:

  • Ensure the subfloor moisture level does not exceed 2%. If it is higher, a suitable damp-proof insulation layer is highly recommended.

  • The subfloor must be perfectly level for effective installation and long-term durability.

  • Install one thermostat per room. Each thermostat should control a single heating zone to provide accurate temperature regulation.

  • WiFi thermostats (e.g., TF-WiFi models) can control up to 15 zones from a single app, ideal for modern smart homes.

  • Use a 16A thermostat, and do not exceed 80% of its maximum load – this equates to a maximum of 13A safe load for continuous operation.

  • Use two separate corrugated conduits from the floor to the thermostat: one for the power supply cable, and the second for the floor temperature sensor.

  • Laying the heating film can be done by a person with basic DIY skills, but all electrical connections must be completed by a certified electrician in accordance with Irish regulations.

Underfloor heating mats are especially popular in rooms with ceramic or porcelain tiles, such as bathrooms and kitchens. These mats provide fast and efficient heat-up times, which is crucial during colder months. They can be installed in new buildings or as part of renovation projects since they require no major structural changes to the floor.

Waterproof and highly durable, they’re ideal for high-moisture areas. Available in multiple sizes, they can be tailored to fit any room shape, ensuring effective heating with minimal waste. Enjoy a cozy and stylish interior with a system that adapts to your space and lifestyle.

Eco-Friendly Floor Heating Solution

Electric heating mats are an eco-conscious alternative to traditional heating systems. By using electricity instead of burning fuel, they help reduce CO₂ emissions and improve indoor air quality. When combined with renewable energy sources like solar panels, the system becomes 100% sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Thanks to modern electronic thermostats, energy use is optimized, leading to lower utility bills and a reduced carbon footprint. Moreover, the mats are durable, moisture-resistant, and require no major building work during installation — minimizing waste and labor costs. This makes them an excellent long-term investment for anyone seeking an efficient, low-maintenance, and eco-friendly heating solution.

Installation Layers of an Electric Underfloor Heating Mat (Direct Heating System)

The structure of a properly installed underfloor heating system using heating mats typically consists of the following layers:

  1. Cement screed – provides a stable, level base.

  2. Heating mat – the core component that generates and distributes heat.

  3. Flexible tile adhesive or self-leveling compound – designed for use with underfloor heating to ensure optimal heat transfer.

  4. Final floor covering – suitable materials include ceramic tiles, stone, or engineered wood flooring.

This setup ensures efficient heat distribution and long-lasting performance. When properly installed, the system delivers fast warm-up times, improved energy efficiency, and a high level of comfort in any room.

Versatility and Easy Installation

Installing electric heating mats as your primary underfloor heating solution is not limited by a building’s structure. The system can be installed directly on top of an old floor during a renovation or in a new build before finishing the floor with tiles, parquet, or ceramics. Electric heating mats significantly improve a building’s thermal comfort without adding a significant load to the ceiling, which means they can be installed on the ground floor, in the attic, or on any other level.

Best Practices During & After Installation

 During Installation:

  • Do not overlap the heating film – overlapping may cause overheating or malfunction.
  • Avoid placing electrical wires directly on top of the heating foil to prevent short circuits or damage.
  • Use only certified tools for making clip connections to ensure reliable conductivity and safety.
  • Secure all copper ends – all copper strips must be sealed using black butyl insulation tape.
  • Wear soft-soled shoes to avoid damaging the surface of the heating film.
  • Install Termofol foam insulation across the entire floor area for improved energy efficiency.

 After Installation:

  • Test the system resistance before covering it with flooring.
  • Take clear photos of the installed heating film for documentation or warranty purposes.
  • Mark the exact location of each strip on the warranty card – including precise measurements from walls or room edges.
