Choosing flooring compatible with infrared heating film is not just a design decision. The floor finish affects heat transfer, response time, permitted surface temperature and the construction required to protect the heating system.
Infrared heating film is best known as a low-profile, dry underfloor heating solution beneath compatible floating floors. Laminate and engineered wood are the most common choices. Selected click vinyl and carpet systems may also be suitable, while bonded tiles normally call for a different build-up—often an electric heating mat embedded in flexible adhesive or levelling compound.
This guide explains which floors can work, which details must be checked with the flooring manufacturer and when a heating mat is a better choice than heating film.
Quick answer: Compatible laminate and engineered wood are usually the clearest matches for infrared heating film. Selected floating vinyl and low-resistance carpet systems can work only when the complete floor build-up is approved. Tiles and stone should never be bonded directly onto heating film; for a typical tiled bathroom or kitchen, a cable heating mat is normally the more straightforward system.

Why floor compatibility matters
The finished floor sits between the heating element and the room. It must allow useful heat to pass through while remaining stable through repeated warming and cooling cycles.
An unsuitable floor can create several problems:
- excessive thermal resistance and slow heat transfer;
- local heat build-up beneath the covering;
- movement, shrinkage, gapping or distortion;
- softening or discolouration of temperature-sensitive materials;
- damage to click joints or adhesives;
- an operating temperature outside the flooring warranty;
- insufficient heat output at the room surface.
Compatibility is determined by the complete construction, not by the decorative material alone. A laminate plank may be approved for underfloor heating, but an unsuitable high-resistance underlay beneath it can still impair the system. A vinyl product may tolerate underfloor heating, yet its installation instructions may permit only an embedded system and not heating film immediately below the boards.
Always obtain written technical information for the exact flooring range. A statement such as “suitable for underfloor heating” is a starting point, not the whole specification.

Laminate flooring
Compatible floating laminate is one of the most practical finishes above infrared heating film. The film is thin, spreads heat across a broad area and can be installed without a wet screed. This makes the combination particularly useful where floor height and renovation time are limited.
A typical project includes a level subfloor, suitable insulation layer, heating film, protective vapour layer where specified and the floating laminate. The exact order and materials must follow the TERMOFOL system instructions.
Before selecting laminate, confirm:
- the exact product is approved for electric underfloor heating;
- it may be used above a dry or foil-based heating system;
- the permitted maximum surface or contact temperature;
- the maximum thermal resistance of the full floor covering;
- which underlay may be used;
- whether a floor-temperature sensor is mandatory;
- any commissioning or gradual warm-up procedure.
Many flooring manufacturers use 27°C as a maximum floor-contact temperature. For example, Quick-Step states a 27°C limit for its compatible low-temperature laminate systems. That figure should not be copied blindly to another brand: the limit stated for the exact floor being installed always takes priority.

Engineered wood flooring
Engineered wood can be an excellent partner for underfloor heating because its layered construction is generally more dimensionally stable than a comparable solid timber board. It still remains a natural wood product and must be heated within the flooring manufacturer’s limits.
The words “engineered wood” do not guarantee compatibility. Species, board thickness, core construction, plank width, moisture content and installation method all influence performance.
Check that the supplier confirms:
- compatibility with electric underfloor heating;
- whether floating installation is permitted;
- the maximum floor-surface temperature;
- the maximum combined thermal resistance;
- acceptable room humidity and acclimatisation conditions;
- limits on rugs and furniture that could trap heat;
- the required warm-up and cool-down procedure.
Kährs, for example, requires the surface of its compatible wood floors to remain at or below 27°C and advises following both the flooring and heating-system instructions. This is useful industry context, but the specification for the chosen board remains the controlling document.
Wide boards and temperature-sensitive species can require additional care. Do not substitute a generic internet recommendation for written confirmation from the flooring supplier.
Floating vinyl, LVT and SPC
Selected floating vinyl, luxury vinyl tile and rigid SPC click floors may be compatible with infrared heating film, but the construction is more product-specific than it is with laminate.
Vinyl is relatively thin and can transfer heat well. It can also be sensitive to excessive temperature, point loads and an uneven or soft substrate. Heating-film connectors and wiring must not create high spots beneath the finished floor.
For this reason, an approved vinyl system may require a rigid, high-compressive-strength support or load-distribution layer as part of the build-up. TERMOFOL offers a SUPERTHERM insulation board developed for floating vinyl flooring, but its presence does not replace the need to approve the entire construction.
Before installation, confirm:
- that the vinyl range is approved for electric underfloor heating;
- whether approval includes a dry heating-film system rather than only heating embedded in screed;
- the manufacturer’s temperature limit;
- the required substrate strength and flatness;
- whether an additional protective or load-spreading layer is required;
- the permitted underlay and its thermal resistance;
- restrictions on heavy furniture, islands or concentrated point loads.
Glue-down LVT is a different construction from floating click vinyl. Do not place adhesive or glue-down vinyl directly over exposed heating film. Resilient-floor manufacturers such as Forbo require controlled commissioning and specify temperature limits at the underside of the floor covering for their approved underfloor-heating installations. Follow the chosen flooring and adhesive system in full.
Carpet and carpet underlay
Carpet can be used with some underfloor-heating systems, but it naturally resists heat flow. The carpet, underlay and every other layer above the heater must be evaluated together.
The key figure is the combined TOG value. Carpet manufacturer Cormar advises a combined carpet-and-underlay value below 2.5 TOG for suitable underfloor-heating applications, while also recommending confirmation with the heating manufacturer. TERMOFOL’s permitted total may be different for a particular heating-film construction, so both requirements must be satisfied.
Use only a complete assembly that TERMOFOL has approved for carpet. Do not place ordinary soft carpet or underlay directly onto unprotected heating film. The system may need a specified protective and load-distribution layer to prevent mechanical damage and local heat build-up.
Confirm:
- heating-film approval for the specific carpet construction;
- carpet TOG;
- underlay TOG;
- total thermal resistance of all layers;
- required protective layer above the film;
- maximum temperature;
- restrictions on thick rugs, beanbags and flat-bottomed furniture.
A thicker, more insulating finish can increase warm-up time and reduce the heat available to the room. This matters particularly when heating film is intended as the main heat source.
Ceramic tiles and natural stone
Tiles and stone transfer heat effectively, but they are bonded finishes. They require a stable base, flexible adhesive and a heating element that is safely incorporated within the floor construction.
TERMOFOL technical information includes engineered heating-film build-ups for ceramic finishes. Such a construction is a designed system with protective, reinforcing and covering layers—it is not permission to spread tile adhesive directly onto heating film.
For most standard tiled bathrooms, kitchens and entrance areas, a TERMOFOL electric heating mat is the more direct solution. Its cable is fixed to mesh and embedded in compatible flexible tile adhesive or levelling compound below the tile.
This gives a clear practical rule:
- use heating film for a compatible dry floating-floor construction;
- use a heating mat for a typical bonded tile or stone construction;
- use film below tiles only where TERMOFOL has designed and approved the complete assembly for that exact project.
Wet rooms also require correct waterproofing, electrical zoning and testing. The floor finish being compatible with heat does not by itself make the complete bathroom installation compliant.
Solid wood, cork, bamboo and specialist floors
These products should never be approved by material name alone.
Solid wood
Solid timber expands and contracts as moisture and temperature change. Some specialist products may be approved for underfloor heating, while many are not. Board width, thickness, species, moisture content and fixing method all matter. Engineered wood is normally the lower-risk choice, but only the manufacturer can approve the exact floor.
Cork
Cork provides natural thermal insulation. That can make it comfortable underfoot but may also reduce heat transfer. Use it only when its technical sheet confirms compatibility and its resistance falls within the heating-system limit.
Bamboo
Bamboo floors vary widely in construction and adhesive content. Some engineered bamboo products are approved for low-temperature underfloor heating; others are not. Obtain written confirmation for the exact range.
Rubber, foam-backed floors and specialist composites
These may soften, insulate or react to heat. Do not install them over heating film without explicit approval from both manufacturers.
How to read a flooring technical sheet
Before buying the heating system or floor, look for six pieces of information.
1. Heating-system type
“Suitable for underfloor heating” may refer only to low-temperature water pipes or an electric element embedded in screed. Look for approval covering electric dry underfloor heating or heating film.
2. Maximum floor temperature
The figure may refer to the upper surface, contact surface or underside of the flooring. Confirm where the sensor limit should be applied. Many temperature-sensitive finishes use a limit around 27°C, but the exact product may require a different setting.
3. Thermal resistance
Thermal resistance may be shown in m²K/W, a TOG value or another stated measure. The values of the floor, underlay and other layers must be added together. A lower resistance normally allows heat to reach the room more easily.
4. Installation method
Check whether the floor may float, click, glue down or requires another fixing method. Approval for one method does not automatically apply to another.
5. Commissioning procedure
Many manufacturers require the floor to acclimatise and the temperature to be increased gradually after installation. Ignoring this process can affect dimensional stability and the warranty.
6. Warranty conditions
Keep the technical sheet, installation photographs, system test results and thermostat settings. If compatibility is important to a warranty, obtain the flooring supplier’s confirmation in writing before work starts.
Why the floor-temperature sensor matters
An air thermostat measures the room. It does not know the exact temperature at the underside or surface of a temperature-sensitive floor.
A correctly positioned floor sensor lets the thermostat enforce a maximum floor limit. This protects the floor when:
- the room is warming from cold;
- solar gain changes the air temperature;
- a rug or furniture alters heat release locally;
- the requested room temperature is set unusually high;
- the floor covering transfers heat more slowly than expected.
The sensor should be installed in the location and conduit specified by TERMOFOL, away from a copper busbar and where it can provide a representative reading. The system should use a thermostat that supports both the required control mode and the flooring limit.

Typical floating-floor construction
A common dry build-up beneath compatible laminate or engineered wood may include:
- a dry, clean, stable and level structural subfloor;
- the specified TERMOFOL insulation or reflective underlay;
- infrared heating film laid according to the approved plan;
- correctly insulated connectors and neatly routed cables;
- a floor-temperature sensor in its specified position;
- a protective vapour membrane or other layer where required;
- the approved floating floor finish.
TERMOFOL supplies a vapour membrane designed as a protective cover for heating film. Whether it is required and how joints are sealed should follow the current installation instructions.
The floor must remain free to move as its manufacturer intends. Expansion gaps, perimeter clearances and room-transition details remain important even though the heating element is thin.
Heating film or heating mat?
The final floor often makes the first system decision.

Common compatibility mistakes
Buying the floor before checking the heating method
The finish may be approved for one type of underfloor heating but not the proposed dry film construction.
Looking only at the decorative surface
The underlay, vapour layer, support board and adhesive can change the thermal performance of the complete floor.
Treating 27°C as a universal setting
It is a common manufacturer limit, not a universal permission. Some floors may specify less, use a different measurement point or prohibit the proposed heating type entirely.
Putting heating film beneath fixed furniture
Flat-bottomed fitted units and furniture can trap heat. Heating areas should be planned around kitchens, wardrobes, baths and other permanent obstructions.
Adding thick rugs after commissioning
A large insulating rug changes the floor construction after the system has been designed. Check the floor and heating instructions before covering a heated area.
Omitting the floor sensor
Room-air control alone may not protect laminate, wood or vinyl from exceeding its permitted floor temperature.
Bonding directly to heating film
Tile adhesive, levelling compound or glue-down flooring must not be applied directly to film unless the complete engineered assembly explicitly requires and protects it.
Assuming maximum wattage is always better
Heating output must suit the floor-temperature limit and room heat loss. A high-output film cannot compensate for too little heated area if the floor may not safely release that output.
A pre-purchase checklist
Send the following information to the TERMOFOL Technical Team before ordering:

- fixed furniture and unheated areas;
- floor type, brand, range and product code;
- flooring technical sheet;
- underlay and protective-layer details;
- maximum permitted floor temperature;
- total thermal resistance or combined TOG;

- BER or known insulation standard;
- whether the system is primary or supplementary heating;
- the electrician’s planned thermostat and circuit arrangement.
Final electrical connections and verification should be completed by a Safe Electric Registered Electrical Contractor. Keep resistance-test records and installation photographs before the floor is closed.

What is the best flooring for infrared heating film?
